Biden comments on Trump’s ‘embarrassing’ offensive rally rhetoric

Your support helps us to tell the story

This election is still a dead heat, according to most polls. In a fight with such wafer-thin margins, we need reporters on the ground talking to the people Trump and Harris are courting. Your support allows us to keep sending journalists to the story.

The Independent is trusted by 27 million Americans from across the entire political spectrum every month. Unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock you out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. But quality journalism must still be paid for.

Help us keep bring these critical stories to light. Your support makes all the difference.

With just eight days left in the 2024 presidential election cycle, Donald Trump and Kamala Harris are making their final push to voters across the U.S., especially in battleground states.

In the crucial swing state of Pennsylvania, Barack Obama and Bruce Springsteen spoke in support of Harris at a rally in Philadelphia, while in Michigan Harris herself was slated to address supporters in Ann Arbor.

“She is running to be the 47th president of the United States. Donald Trump is running to be an American tyrant,” Springsteen told the crowd.

Down in Atlanta, Georgia, Donald Trump opened his rally with a swipe at Michelle Obama, saying she had been “nasty” to him and ominously claiming she had made “a big mistake” by doing so.

Fallout continues from Trump’s blockbuster campaign rally at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Sunday. which was widely condemned for being racist — though Marjorie Taylor Greene has defended speaker Tony Hinchcliffe over his joke comparing Puerto Rico to garbage.

Jeff Bezos defends himself in Washington Post op-ed

In an op-ed for – who’d have guessed it – The Washington Post, Bezos argues that endorsements undermine journalists’ neutrality and that stopping them helps to mitigate the ongoing and long-term decline of trust in American media.

He said that “neither campaign nor candidate was consulted or informed at any level or in any way about this decision”, and that he has never once pressured any Post journalists to the benefit of his other business interests.

“By itself, declining to endorse presidential candidates is not enough to move us very far up the trust scale, but it’s a meaningful step in the right direction,” Bezos said.

“I wish we had made the change earlier than we did, in a moment further from the election and the emotions around it. That was inadequate planning, and not some intentional strategy.”

The Washington Post originally did not make official endorsements, but began doing so in 1976, and has not previouly failed to endorse a candidate since 1988.

‘I’m rich as hell, I don’t give a damn’

Here’s some lines from Trump’s rally in Atlanta, courtesy of my colleague Phil Thomas:

  • Trump claimed that he “[doesn’t] even know what it’s all about” as he addressed the Atlanta criminal charges against him for allegedly trying to bully state officials into “finding” him an extra 11,870 votes.
  • He also fantasized about Al Capone having people whacked after taking them out for dinner?
  • “I’m rich as hell, I don’t give a damn”
  • One of his first topics was the alleged threat of transgender rights: “We don’t want transgender operations all over the place… we don’t want men playing in women’s sports… nobody’s ever come up to me and said, ‘sir, it’s really important to me – would you do me a favour – would you let men play in women’s sports?”

Harris shouts out Gen Z: ‘You are impatient for change’

Meanwhile, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Kamala Harris is giving a shout out to Generation Z, according to my colleague Josh Marcus.

“I love your generation. I really do. You are rightly impatient for change,” she says. “I love that about you.”

“You have only known the climate crisis are leading the charge to protect our planet and our future. You young leaders who grew up with active shooter drills and are fighting then to keep our schools safe. You who know fewer rights than your mothers and grandmothers are standing up for reproductive freedom.

“I know for you then, these issues are not theoretical.”

She also argued that the overturning of Roe v Wade by Trump-appointed judges was unpopular with men as well as women, saying: “The men of America are seeing their daughters and wives and sisters and mothers put at risk because their rights have been taken from them. The men of America don’t want this.”

Obama mocks Trump Bibles made in China

Barack Obama has mocked Donald Trump for selling Bibles made in China as he speaks at the Harris rally in Philadelphia.

“You’re Mr Tough Guy on China, except when you can make a few bucks,” the former president said, according to my colleague Josh Marcus.

“You cannot make this stuff up. If it was on Saturday Night Live, everybody would just say that’s exaggerated. It’s not, he’s doing it. The reason he’s doing it is because that’s what he cares about: his ego, his money, his status.”

He also sharply criticised the racist rhetoric on display at Trump’s Madison Square Garden rally last night, saying: “Here’s a good rule. If somebody does not respect you, if somebody does not see you as fellow citizens with equal claims to opportunity, to the pursuit of happiness, to the American dream – you should not vote for them.

“We have to reject the kind of politics of division and hatred that we saw represented. America is ready to turn the page.”

Bruce Springsteen: ‘Trump is running to be an American tyrant’

Meanwhile, in the crucial swing state of Pennsylvania, Bruce Springsteen is on stage at a Kamala Harris rally, playing his guitar.

“I’m Bruce Springsteen and I’m here today to support Kamala Harris and Tim Walz,” said the Born in the USA singer in his trademark growl. “And to oppose Donald Trump and JD Vance!”

He went on: “Here’s why. I want a president who reveres the constitution. Who does not threaten, but wants to protect and guide, our great democracy. Who believes in the rule of law and the peaceful transfer of power. Who will fight for women’s rights.”

Harris, he added, “is running to be the 47th president of the United States. Donald Trump is running to be an American tyrant.”

Trump opens Atlanta rally with swipe at Michelle Obama

Trump began his rally in Atlanta, Georgia with a swipe at Michelle Obama, saying she has been “nasty” to him and ominously saying she made a “big mistake” by criticizing him.

“You know who’s nasty to me? Michelle Obama,” he said. “I always tried to be so nice and respectful.

“She opened up a little bit of a box. She opened up a little bit of something. Oh, she was nasty. Shouldn’t be that way. That was a big mistake that she made.”

Full story: comedian planned to call Harris a ‘c**t’

Comedian Tony Hinchcliffe was condemned across the political spectrum after he took the stage at Madison Square Garden to call Puerto Rico a “floating island of garbage” and invoke racist tropes about Jews and Black people.

But according to reports, his original draft also included a line where he called Kamala Harris the C-word.

Here’s my full story on Hinchcliffe’s nixed joke – and how it echoes language already used by Elon Musk’s Super PAC.

Candace Owens blocked from entering Australia

Australia has refused to allow right-wing content creator Candace Owens into the country for a planned speaking tour, with officials saying it wouldn’t serve the “national interest” to welcome the online provocateur.

“From downplaying the impact of the Holocaust with comments about [Nazi doctor Josef] Mengele through to claims that Muslims started slavery, Candace Owens has the capacity to incite discord in almost every direction,” Immigration Minister Tony Burke told Australian outlets over the weekend.

“Australia’s national interest is best served when Candace Owens is somewhere else.”

“Tickets to these events are selling for $100,” he added in The Sydney Morning Herald. “I hope she has a good refunds policy.”

Giuliani may have to give up $3.5m condo

A pair of election workers Rudy Giuliani defamed are preparing to obtain a long list of valuables, including a 1980 Mercedes Benz once owned by Lauren Bacall, and his Manhattan penthouse, after a federal judge ordered the disbarred former mayor to turn over his property last week.

Giuliani’s attorneys returned to court on Monday as he faces an imminent deadline for Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss to seize assets that they plan to sell to make up for the nearly $150 million he owes for defaming them in the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election, when he falsely accused them of manipulating ballots and election results in Georgia.

The former mayor plans to maintain his residence in Palm Beach, Florida, but he is barred by the court from doing anything to diminish its value as District Judge Lewis Liman determines whether his creditors can seize it.

Alex Woodward has the story.
